Гостевая "Учебный класс" - это бесплатные уроки английского, направленные на изучение бытовых ситуаций общения не только с точки зрения используемого английского языка, но и кросскультурного контекста и этикета общения. Гостевая является прекрасным дополнением к нашим курсам и предназначена для всех, кто хочет усовершенствовать свой английский язык и легко чувствовать себя в типовых ситуациях общения.

Каждый урок состоит из трех разделов:

• информационного, содержащего языковую информацию и кросскультурные комментарии по представленной теме;
• коммуникативного, в котором приводится пример типового диалога;
• юмористического, помогающего понять и почувствовать английскую культуру.

Какие бы цели изучения английского языка вы не преследовали, тема "Знакомство" является частью любой из них. Ведь знакомиться нужно и с будущими коллегами по работе, и с бизнес-партнерами и просто в туристических поездках за границу. Что такое знакомство на английском языке? Конечно, в первую очередь, Вы должны выучить несколько фраз для приветствия и знакомства. Но всегда нужно помнить об этикете знакомства, т.е. правилах поведения при встрече с незнакомыми людьми.

I. So, let’s begin our lesson.

It is important to use the right vocabulary and phrases when you meet someone and introduce yourself in English. First impressions are very important, so here we recommend the right expressions in the right situations.

Greeting people you don’t know

You can say "Hello" to people you don’t know.

But a more formal greeting is "Good morning / afternoon / evening." "My name is … (Michael)."

The other person normally replies with the same greeting as you have used, and then makes a polite conversation, such as "How are you?" or "How was your trip?"

Introducing yourself

When you introduce yourself to someone new, what you say depends on how formal the situation is.

At an informal party: "Hello, I’m Michael." Or "Hello, my name’s Michael"

The answer could be: "Hi, I’m Jane." Or "Hello, Michael, I’m Jane." Or "Nice to meet you, I’m Jane."

At work-related events: "I’d like to introduce myself. I’m Michael Wolf, from the REWARD language school."

The reply could be: "Nice to meet you. I’m Jane Smith, from St. Giles International." Or "Pleased to meet you. I’m Jane Smith, from St. Giles International." Or "How do you do? I’m Jane Smith, from St. Giles International."

"How do you do?" is very formal for British English speakers, so the reply to this question is to repeat How do you do? Note that it doesn’t mean a question and it is used only once when you meet people for the first time!

It is polite to greet many people at a social event. This is called "mingling". After you greet people you know, look for people you haven’t met before. Introduce yourself and start a conversation.

• Say hello and introduce yourself to a person who is not in a conversation.
• Talk about your relationship to the host.
• Discuss one party related item (food, theme, length of stay).

There are some more useful phrases:

• How do you know Jane? (party host)
• I don’t think we’ve met.
• Have you been here long?
• Have you tried the dessert/punch?
• The food looks great. I can’t wait to try the dessert.
• I love your dress/shirt/hat. It really looks good on you.
• These decorations are wonderful. I love the table cloth/balloons/flowers.

Introducing other people

When you introduce two people to each other, what you say depends on the situation.

Introducing a friend to a work colleague: "Jane, have you met my colleague Michael?" or "Jane, I’d like you to meet my colleague Michael."

Jane replies: "Pleased to meet you, Michael." Or "Nice to meet you, Michael." Michael could say: "Nice to meet you, too, Jane." Or "Hello, Jane."

In a more informal situation: When you introduce two of your friends to each other, you can simply say, "Jane, this is Michael."

II. Study the sample dialogues:

1) Mr. Hyde is meeting Mr. Woods for the first time.

Mr. Hyde: Good morning. My name’s Robert Hyde. I’m from ZPG Computers in London.

Mr. Woods: How do you do, Mr. Hyde? I’m Michael Woods.

Mr. Hyde: How do you do, Mr. Woods? I’m very pleased to meet you.

Mr. Woods: Pleased to meet you too, Mr. Hyde.

2) Michael met Robert several more times. Here they meet each other in the street.

Robert: Michael!

Michael: Robert!

Robert: Hi. How are you?

Michael: I’m fine thanks. And you?

Robert: Oh, I’m well. How’s Jane?

Michael: She’s fine, too.

Robert: Good.

III. Understanding humour is an important part of immerging into the English culture.

1. Everybody Knows Bob

One day a bartender was tending his bar, when a fellow walked in, ordered a drink, and said, "Hi, my name's Bob, and I know everybody."

So the bartender, wanting to have a little fun, said, "I bet you don't know Elvis." Bob says, "Oh, I know Elvis! We were kids together, we grew up together." So Bob and the bartender made a bet that Bob didn't know Elvis. Bob and the bartender went down to the cheap apartment in Mexico where Bob thought Elvis was living, tapped on the door, and Elvis answered. "Bob, ole' buddy, long time no see!....etc.." So Bob won his bet with the bartender.

Two weeks later, Bob walks back into the bar, orders a drink, and says, "Hi, my name's Bob, and I know everybody."

So the bartender says, " Oh yeah? I bet you don't know Tom Hanks."

Bob replies, "Oh, yeah, Tom and I were on a Little League team together; I know Tom!" So Bob and the bartender make another bet, and they go to Hollywood. Bob drives them to Tom Hank's mansion, and they knock on the door. Tom Hanks answers the door and exclaims," Bob, where've you been all this time!...etc..." So Bob won his second bet with the bartender

Three weeks later Bob walks back into the bar, orders a drink, and says, "Hi my name's Bob, and I know everybody."

The bartender looks at Bob, and says, "Look, Bob, you've almost won all my money. But I'll bet my last $200 that you don't know the Pope." Bob says, (Can you guess?)" Oh, yeah, the Pope and I were in Scouts together, I know the Pope."

So Bob and the bartender go to the Vatican and stand with the huddled masses, waiting for the Pope to come out and address them.

The Pope doesn't appear, and Bob says, "Gee, maybe I'd better go check on him and make sure he's OK. "The bartender says, "Yeah, you go check on the Pope. Sure." So Bob goes to check on the Pope, and in a few minutes comes out on the little balcony thing with his arm around the Pope.

Then Bob notices that his friend the bartender has passed out, so he excuses himself and runs to the bartender. He quickly revives the bartender and asks, "Gee, was it losing your last $200 that made you pass out like that?"

The bartender replies," No, when you came out with your arm around the Pope, this nice little old lady said, 'Hey, who is that up there with Bob?"

2. "How are you doing?"

A Jewish man called his mother in Florida.

He said to his mother, "How are you doing?"

She said, "Not too good. I've been very weak."

The son then asked, "Why are you so weak?"

She said, "Because I haven't eaten in 38 days."

The son then asked, "Why you haven't eaten in 38 days!?"

She said, "Because I didn't want my mouth to be filled with food when you called."
